To mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on agriculture, the Department of Agriculture-Central Visayas through the Adaptation and Mitigation Initiative in Agriculture (DA-AMIA) conducted a workshop on climate information services today, June 21, 2024, to help and guide the farmers and fisherfolk in their farming and fishing activities.
This is being supported with a Department Order No. 09 series of 2024, that expand and mainstream climate resiliency action through climate information systems across all regions.
“Climate change is here and it is happening, so, we need to at least prepare and take action to mitigate the effects of climate change,” said Grace Len C. Dagala, the OIC- Research Division Chief, as she noted the importance of the climate information services.
Representatives from different banner programs including Corn, Livestock, Organic Agriculture, High-Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP), Regional Soils Laboratory, Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Unit from the Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation Division were engaged in a series of workshops particularly in generating data to be used in the crafting the a Regional/Provincial Seasonal Climate Outlook and Advisories (R/PSCOA), 10-day Farm Weather Outlook and Advisory (FWOA), and the Special FWOA.
Antonio Tangayan, the DA7 Climate Information Services Focal of AMIA, discussed the implementation and updates of the Agro-Climatic Advisory Portal, a new digital tool developed and piloted by the DA through its Climate Resilient Agriculture Office in the Bicol Region.
It is an online web portal capable of “automatically generating and disseminating climate information services” such as climate and weather-informed farming and fishing advisories.
