Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Francisco “Kiko” P. Tiu Laurel, Jr. lauded the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Metro Cebu Uptown for its commitment to youth empowerment, community development, and environmental sustainability, as well as fostering entrepreneurship and support to local farmers and fisherfolk.
Speaking to the officers, local and foreign members from Taiwan during their 40th Induction and Turnover Ceremonies held in Mandaue City on February 22, 2025, Secretary Laurel recognized the group for their significant contributions to the community, particularly in supporting the Young Farmers Challenge Program (YFCP), which serves as a catalyst for food security and agricultural innovations.
He also encouraged the young leaders to share their knowledge and experiences to the local farmers in promoting agri-entrepreneurship as a means of financial stability and economic growth. “Napaka importante po na matulungan ninyo, lalo na kayong mga kabataan sa pagnenegosyo ang ating mga farmers at fisherfolk na matuto silang magnegosyo para kumita sila at maayos ang kanilang buhay”, he added.
(It’s very important, that a   s youths who are into businesses, do help our farmers and fisherfolk, for them to learn how to run an enterprise that will provide them with sustainable income and better lives.)
The Agri Chief further added that the various projects initiated by JCI provide positive changes in the community.
“As you continue to expand your numbers and resources, I am confident in your capacity to share your entrepreneurial success with those who form the backbone of our nation. Your commitment to social responsibility spurs you to channel your growth into providing support for our farmers and fisherfolk, equipping them with the necessary resources to increase their production and income,” Secretary Laurel shares.
Aside from the keynote message, another highlight of the visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Department of Agriculture and JCI Metro Cebu Uptown, signifying a strengthened collaboration for agricultural and entrepreneurial support.
Secretary Laurel expressed his gratitude for the organization’s willingness to partner with DA in enhancing the livelihood of farmers and fisherfolk.
“Congratulations once again! May the JCI Metro Cebu Uptown continue to prosper for another 40 years and beyond,” Secretary Laurel concluded.
Secretary Laurel was accompanied by the Department of Agriculture- Central Visayas (DA7) Executive Committee members, led by Regional Executive Director Angel Enriquez, who also signed the MOU on the current undertaking with the Young Farmers Challenge Program (YFCP) of DA.
JCI Metro Cebu Uptown LO President Joshua Ouano Dizon extended his gratitude to DA Secretary for serving as keynote speaker, highlighting his vast experience and industry knowledge.
The event marked another milestone for JCI Metro Cebu Uptown, reinforcing its commitment in creating lasting positive change in the community while empowering young leaders to take an active role in nation-building.
