Castillo, welcomed the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Deputy Commander, Major Cristopher A. Montecillo, as he paid a courtesy visit the regional office, requesting for assistance to address the reported infestation of the Red Stripe Scale Insect on sugarcane farms in Negros, particularly in Barangay Mabini and neighboring municipalities.
RTD Castillo said, the DA can conduct field validation to determine the spread and degree of the infestation, as well as assess possible treatment options. However, Castillo emphasized that since the affected crop is sugarcane, the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) has jurisdiction over the matter. The SRA plays a vital role in regulating and supporting the sugar industry in the Philippines.
Bienvenido Acabal Jr., Chief of the Regional Crop Protection Center (RCPC), who was present in the meeting expressed support in conducting technical assessments and ensuring the proper formulation and application of pesticides to control the pest and prevent further damage.
