In celebration of the Farmers and Fisherfolk Month (FFM), the Province of Siquijor, together with the Department of Agriculture-Central Visayas (DA7), DA-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-7 (DA-BFAR7) and Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), conducted an FFM- Bagong Pilipinas Town Hall with various activities and contests today, May 16, 2024 held at the Siquijor Provincial Capitol, Pulangyuta, Siquijor, Siquijor.

The celebration, attended by House Representative Zaldy Villa, Governor Jake Vincent Villa, Vice Governor Mei Ling Quezon, DA7 Gerry Avila of the Field Operation Division, DA-BFAR Warren Inao, Provincial Agriculturist Emigdio Coritico and OIC-Provincial Veterinarian John Patagoc, among others.

In his message, Avila, who represented Regional Executive Director Angel Enriquez, said that agriculture is the backbone of the economy. He emphasized the role of the farmers and fisherfolk, encouraging them to continue their endeavors, which is farming and fishing. With the influx of foreigners and even local tourists coming to Siquijor, there’s a need to increase the production of local food to meet its growing demand, as well as reducing food prices. Also, with steady markets, farmers are encouraged to produce more. Agri produce and value-adding products must be affordable, accessible and nutritious for these (tourists) markets.

He also affirmed the message of the vice governor, that farmers and fishers need to develop their entrepreneurial skills and that agriculture is not only a science and art, but also a business.

In addition, Avila also shared the need for the province to be food secured, which is one of the goals of the DA, guided with the different strategies as stipulated in the 4-year DA plan.

Representative Villa, recognized the importance and the strength of the farmers and fishers. Their effort must be recognized for ensuring and providing food for the province and for every family.

“Their dedication is evident for the foods we have on our tables. Despite facing numerous challenges, they remain resilient. You are all our heroes,” Representative Villa said.

Vice Governor Quezon, shared that they always gave their full support to the farmers and fishers. “We need to give them what they need in producing foods, to train them of becoming an entrepreneurs, and give them continuous education through technology training. We need to recognize our farmers and fishers, that as stewards, they remain steadfast, they are the one’s who fed the people of Siquijor,” she said.

As part of the festivities, a Bagong Pilipinas Townhall was held, presenting the DA’s 4-year plan and RSBSA updates by Siquijor-APCO, Agnes Guanella Cafe; programs and activities of the Wildlife Conservation Society with their ridge-to-reef approach.

A ceremonial turnover of a 30 ft pumpboat was awarded to the South Fisherfolk South Poblacion, Larena Siquijor.

Part of the celebration was the KADIWA ng Pangulo, provision of free services such as manicures, pedicures, haircuts, massages, vitamins, and distribution of vegetable seeds.

Various contests were also simultaneous conducted, to include net mending, cooking, singing, balak and on-the-spot poster making. Food demonstrations on Tea Making (Siquijor Healing Herbs Tea) and meat processing as part of the event given by TESDA.
